History

Hammamet has a long history that goes back to the period of Roman rule. The Arabs called this place as we know it today. At the end of the first millennium there appeared the first fortifications. The city was an important strategic point, and for its possession lots of people shed their blood. The brightest event: the siege of Hammamet in 1560 by famous pirate Dragut. During the Second World War on its area was placed the headquarters of a tank armada. In the 20's of the last century, many Europeans began to visit Hammamet, though the Roman legionnaires came here to treat their wounds.
